This course introduces the aesthetics of premodern Japanese Art. It is divided into two sections. Section 1 presents major pre-modern schools of Japanese painting (Tosa, Kanō, Rinpa, and Nanga) ‒ the word “school” is to be taken widely here. Section 2 introduces several types of images from the Edo period (Otsu-e, kodomo-e, yōkai-e, shunga, etc.).
