Study of the Concept of “人文学“: Focusing on the Appearance of the Word ”人文学” in Japanese Dictionaries

   The purpose of this paper is to investigate and examine the appearance of the word "人文学" in Japanese dictionaries from the Meiji period to the present lexicographically in order to explore the concept of "人文学", which is assumed to be linked to the concept of "liberty".  
   What I can conclude from this investigation is that in the process of philosophical examination and translation of a series of concepts derived from the Latin word humanus (in English, humanity, humanities, humanism, etc.) the word "人文学" was generated under some influence of two Chinese words "人文" and "人道", as a two-character word base.
